Mathew M. McCoy

Mathew M. McCoy is a partner in the firm. He concentrates his practice in the areas of construction and real estate litigation, arbitration, and mediation. In addition to his active Georgia practice, Mr. McCoy created and leads the firm’s South Carolina construction litigation practice. Mr. McCoy is also a trained mediator registered with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution.

Mr. McCoy’s multijurisdictional construction litigation practice includes representation of material suppliers, subcontractors, general contractors, developers, architects, and engineers. He has represented these various entities in virtually every possible litigation scenario, including lien and bond claims, complex construction contract disputes, negligent construction claims, professional negligence claims, and owner lien defenses. Mr. McCoy is a frequent author and seminar speaker on construction-related topics. Mr. McCoy’s real estate litigation practice includes representation of condominium and neighborhood associations, landlords, tenants, and property owners in all aspects of real estate litigation. He has represented these various entities in a wide variety of real estate matters, including complex condominium reformations, easement disputes, property line disputes, interpretations of restrictive covenants, partitions, foreclosures, quiet title actions, condemnations, and ad valorem tax appeals. Mr. McCoy created and leads the firm’s ad valorem tax appeal practice representing property owners in all stages of the tax appeal process, including hearings before the board of equalization, arbitrations, appeals to Superior Court, and hearings before local governmental taxing authorities.

Mr. McCoy is admitted to practice in all Georgia and South Carolina appellate courts, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia, and the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. Mr. McCoy’s reported cases include: Speedwell United Methodist Church v. Chatham County, 278 Ga. 234, 599 S.E.2d 185 (2004); Daiss v. Bennett, 273 Ga. App. 784, 616 S.E.2d 114 (2005); McDonald v. Mr. McCoy has been selected as a Georgia Rising Star by Atlanta Magazine from 2007 to 2014. He was named as a Super Lawyer in the area of construction litigation in 2015 and 2016. Mr. McCoy recently served as President of the Savannah Bar Association and is a former president of the Young Lawyer’s Division. He is currently serving on the ICivics Committee for the State Bar of Georgia. Mr. McCoy is also a former President of the Emerging Leaders Committee of the Savannah Community Foundation. He is a member of the Savannah Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia, the State Bar of South Carolina, the State Bar of Wisconsin, and the American Bar Association, including the ABA’s Section of Litigation Construction Committee and Forum on the Construction Industry.

Mr. McCoy received his B.A. in Communication Arts from the University of Wisconsin in 1997. He received his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2001 and began his construction litigation practice at McCorkle, Pedigo & Johnson, LLP, the predecessor to McCorkle, Johnson & McCoy, LLP, immediately upon graduation from law school.

Mr. McCoy is a member of the Home Builders Association of Greater Savannah, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, the Georgia Coastal Conservation Association, and Messiah Lutheran Church. Mr. McCoy is also actively involved in soccer as a coach, fan, referee, and player. Mr. McCoy currently volunteers as a coach for the Coastal Georgia Soccer Association.
